Now it's your turn. . ., it's time for you to own your home in Aspen. Aspen's rich, natural beauty has been captivating people for thousands of years. The Ute Indians were first to recognize these "Shining Mountains" as their homeland, evidenced by archaeology finds dating back 8,000 years. Later, in 1879, prospectors discovered one of the richest silver lodes ever to be known on Ute hunting territory and named the camp "Ute City" which later was named Aspen.
By 1891 Aspen was the nations single largest silver producing mining district. The area was booming with 12, 000 people residing in Aspen, but just a few short years later, low government silver prices shut down all the mines and put thousands out of work.
During Aspen's "Quiet Years", the area survived as a rural county seat and ranching center. By 1935, only 700 people called Aspen home.
But Aspen still had its glorious landscapes and ideal snow falls, which attracted international outdoorsmen that were looking for the perfect area to have a ski resort. World War II delayed their plans, but later the war enhanced the ski development with 10th mountain division soldiers skiing Aspen while on leave.
With year round appeal, Aspen has grown into the world renowned skiing area, as well as the well recognized cultural center, that it is today. Now it's your turn to discover the magic that is Aspen.
